Ayurveda, the Antique Healing System from Southern India

History

Ayurveda (teaching of life) is considered to be the oldest medical tradition in the World. Its roots can be traced back to antique India, around 5000 years back in history. At this time, Hindu scholars called Rishis started to collect and pass on knowledge about diseases cures. Schools similar to the academies of the Western Antiquity formalised these teachings from around 1000 BC. on.

Much of the teachings of ayurveda were lost in subsequent centuries, especially during the colonial age. To preserve the original ideas of ayurveda and match it with Western medical standards, doctors and scientists started in the 1980ies to establish schools in Western countries. Simultanously, more of ayurveda was going into the curriculum of several Indian universities and medical institutions. Today, the label ayurveda is widely used and it can be difficult to evaluate individual organisations or schools. Full article in German.

Foundations

The complex philosophy that serves ayurveda as a basis is often neglected in Western countries. It is not necessary to understand a lot of details for appreciating the elementary lines of thought that ayurvedic teachings follow. Nevertheless, for a thorough understanding of of ayurveda, the philosophy behind the treatments cannot be ignored.

One essential step towards a therapy in ayurveda is the determination of a constitution type, which is the classification of a person as belonging to one or several of the three doshas. This type is them matched with heartbeat diagnosis, diets, enemas, herbal treatments, oil- and aroma- and music therapies and advice for the rhythm and style of life. Full article in German.
